Abstract
A widespread and spectacular outbreak of the above occurred in Tanganyika in 1962. The insect has been reported at various times in the past, particularly from the Lake Region where it is regarded as a great delicacy, as a sporadic pest of rice. During 1942 (Harris 1942) it caused serious damage to bulrush millet, Pennisetum typhoides, which is the staple grain crop of the Central Region. Smee (1948) records Homorocoryphus in Nyasaland -damaging cereal crops.
