Abstract
The history of Embu Regional Research Centre dates back to 1951 when it was established as a General Investigation Centre to cater for the Central Kenya Region. Currently, the centre has a research mandate over ten districts around Mount Kenya area which include, Embu, Mbeere, Kirinyaga, Maragwa, Murang'a, Nyeri, Meru North, Meru Central, Meru South and Tharaka. The centre has a mandate to develop technologies through adaptive, applied and on-farm research of improved crops and livestock management practices geared towards diversification of production systems. The centre has a commodity research mandate of maize, food legumes, oil crops, roots and tubers crops, sorghum and millets, forage crops as well as livestock. The disciplinary mandate of the centre include, soil and water management, crop improvement, soil fertility and management, weed management, crop protection, agroforestry, cropping systems as well as livestock nutrition and management.
