Abstract
Two studies were carried out to test the hypothesis that fluctuations in feed supply have a negative effect on performance and to try and understand the underlying mechanisms. Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum) the common fodder in smallholder dairy farms in Kenya, was used as the good quality feed while barley straw represented the poor quality feed.
