Abstract
We usually receive documents as attachments through e-mail that do not open in the platform we are using. Office suite application file formats such as .doc, . xis, .org, .pub and etc. are from different proprietors such as Microsoft, OpenOffice.org, Sun's Star Office and ffiM's lotus work place. The file formats are different and have become quite difficult to share information to another platform. The exchange of documents and data between authorities, businesses and citizens should be possible without technical barriers. Interoperability in software is vital for sustained growth, freedom to choose, greater accessibility and improved interaction between users, businesses and citizens. The end user is not restricted to a particular proprietor when sharing and accessing documents. Interoperability in the public sector such as Government institutions ensures document exchange between Government agencies and the public with ease. This paper explores the open document format (ODF) in ensuring interoperability in office suite applications. Strategies, approaches and technologies for managing interoperability are highlighted. Applicability and validity of open document format in ensuring interoperability of office suite applications is also discussed.
