Abstract
The year under review will be remembered for its contrast of drought and deluge. The first eight months were marked by poor rainfall and high temperatures after sub-normal rainfall during 1960 throughout all districts East of the Rift. Good rainfall in September was a presage of the deluge which followed in the Short Rains. The rainfall pattern was similar in the Rift Valley and West of the Rift-very heavy following eight months of poor rains. For the third successive year the trees carried an abnormal weight of early crop which drought brought to ripeness prematurely. In consequence, much of the crop was of poor size and quality. The late crop, harvested in the last quarter, was of normal size and quality; but continuous wet weather throughout the peak of the harvest hindered natural drying and the complex processes needed for maintenance of quality.
