Abstract
Rice was first introduced into Central Kavirondo by an officer of the Administration in the early days of the Colony and before the Department of Agriculture existed as it does to-day. Small areas along the Lake shore (Kavirondo Gulf, Lake Victoria) in the Nyakatch location were planted and fairly good results obtained, but unfortunately the growing of this crop was discontinued before any real progress had been made. The original seed was lost and the lake-shore areas were allowed to revert to papyrus. In the year 1934 rice was again tried in Nyakatch. On this occasion the Sen a variety was planted, and the excellent results obtained justified opening up the area for rice-growing.
