Abstract
Theileria parva isolates of low pathogenicity have been isolated at our laboratories over the years. Some of these isolates were selected and their ability to induce immunity which protects cattle against known virulent strains of T. parva was assessed. One isolate, T. parva (Lanet, NVRC Stabilate 263) was shown to be of very low pathogenicity and conferred a broad spectrum of protection against cattle-derived T. parva isolates and partial protection to a buffalo-derived T. parva isolate. Further studies with the T. parva Lanet isolate has shown that it maintains it's low pathogenicity even when the infecting dose is increased four times.
