Abstract
Soil erosion was monitored for two growing seasons in 1975 on field runoff plots established in an alfisol in Nigeria, to investigate the effects of vegetal cover characteristics of cassava, soybean, mixed cropping of maize with cassava and pigeon pea. Annual soil erosion was the least for soybean and the highest for mono crop cassava. These losses were inversely related to the magnitude and the rate of increase of vegetal cover and rainfall interception by the canopy of different cropping systems.
