Abstract
Rabbits, like horses, are herbivores with large functi, onal caeca, within which the large population of micro·organisms are capable of digesting fibr,e and utilizing non·protein nitrogen for the synthesis of microbial protein. The rabbit has the unique advantage of the phenomenon of coprophagy which is a mechanism for recycling the products of caecal fermentation to the upper digestive tract where digestion and absorpNon can take place. Thus the quantities of microbial protein synthesi'zed in the caeca could be significant in the nitrogen metabolism of the rabbit.
