Abstract
Statistics is the study of numerical or quantitative information which may vary between units of study; and of methods of collecting, analysing, and drawing conclusions from information of this kind. The unit of study may be for example a person, a household, a sample of water or tea or rice, a mango tree, a herd of cattle, a field of sorghum, ••••• There is generally a population of these units in which we are interested, which constitutes the universe of study, for example all households in Malawi, or all possible samples of cocoa grown in Ghana, or all mango trees in an experimental plot, or all plots of groundnuts belonging to a particular village. Sometimes we are able to study the whole population, but in many instances it is necessary to select a sample of only some of the units in the population.
