Abstract
Prohibit planting of maize other than during the normal planting dates for the long rain and short rain seasons. At the present, maize is planted continuously throughout the year. I have noticed that maize streak is more prevalent in those regions where maize is grown throughout the year. In most vector pathogen systems and in the life cycles of mammal in vector parasites, the control strategies include interrupting the weakest link in these complex interactions. Allowing one month or more between harvest and planting the next maize crop would disrupt either the leaf hopper life cycle or, most likely, reduce or eliminate the availability of maize streak virus inoculate. This precludes the possibility of other host plants in these regions such as other cereal crops or grasses.
