Abstract
A relatively new method of measuring soil moisture has recently been introduced at the Coffee Research Station. This is based on the scattering of neutrons (subatomic particles)by the hydrogen atoms in water molecules. Very high energy neutrons produced by a source are slowed down by the hydrogen atoms and in t his condition a re-detected by a device sensitive to slow neutrons only. The number of slow neutrons produced is a direct measure of the moisture content of the soil and this forms the basis of the method
