Abstract
A simple method for splenectomy of equine ammals is descnbed. After resection of the 17th lefft rib, the spleen can be exposed and removed very easily. As the diaphragm IS p.lrl1ally attached to this rib a pneumothorax was normally caused. The tear In the diaphragm was sutured and no general collapse occurred in any case. Thirty equine animals aged between 3 months and 12 years were splenectomised successfully by the method descnbed. The operation was performed under field conditions using chloral hydrate anaesthesia.
