Abstract
Coffee, as is well known, is the major export crop of Kenya, accounting for some 30 per cent, by value, of all exports. The crop is also of great importance to the economy of Tanzania and to a lesser extent of Uganda. The main Arabica growing areas of East Africa are shown in the accompanying sketch map. A total of about 210,000 acres are under coffee in Kenya, of which about 79,000 are farmed as estates and the remainder as smallholdings.
