Abstract
National Dryland Fanning Research Centre, Katumani, started in 1956 with a view to serve marginal agricultural potential semi-arid zone of Eastern Kenya. The research centre addressed itself to the problems of low and poorly distributed rainfall, high population density, declining soil fertility, low crop yields, shortage of grazing pastures and frequent famines. One of the major achievements of Katumani during its early days of existence was the development and release of Katumani Composite B (KCB), an early maturing maize variety, in 1968.
