Abstract
Kenya had approximately 490,000km2 of rangeland which covers 80% of the land area of the country (Ayuko 197 6) .These rangelands carry 60% of the country's estimated 9.0 million head of beef cattle, 70% of an estimated 8.5 million sheep and goats and all of the estimated 1.0 million =cames (Ayuko 1978) . Increase in livestock grazing and reduction in fire frequency and intensity during recent years has led to increased bush encroachment on these rangelands (Heady 1960; van Rensburg 1969 Skovlin 1971). It was estimated that nearly all these rangelands were subject to severe hush invasion (Glover 1966).
