Abstract
The proposed Project area is 'located 50 km south of Kisii in South Nyanza District of Nyanza Province. South Nyanza District is situated just south of the equator and is bordered by• Tanzania and Lake Victoria. It is an agricultural area which is mostly devoted to subsistence crops and livestock grazing and only marginally to cash crops. Part of the District is under forest maintained by the Forestry Department. The peasants are generally considered as better farmers than those in the Province's Sugar Belt which is located east of Kisumu, the Provincial capital. The natural vegetation consists of grass and scattered trees (savannah) and strips of riverine forest along some of the streams. The Gucha River and its tributaries Sare and Oyani drain the area. The Sare river flows through Awendo, the main township in the 3 area, and close by the proposed factory site. Its dry-spell flow is 0.112m per second which easily meets the factory, township and downstream water requirements and offers some potential for irrigation.
