Abstract
Among the ant:L theilerial compouhds so far discovered the naphthoquinones have been the most effective. Menoctone was the first naphthoquinone discovered to have 2Il.titheilerial activity (McHardy et ale 1976) and its analogue parvaquone (Clexon, Wellcome) has been developed for field lIse. As part of the ongoing collaborative research between the Veterinary Research Department and Wellcome Laboratories an experiment is outlined ~elow to exarrrrne the potential of another naphthoquinone analogtle, coded 720C. Preliminary studies have shown that 720C is effective against Theileria parva parva (Muguga) as stabilate (147) at a single dose of 2.5mg/kg •. This dose level is considerably below the recommended dose level of lOmg/kg. x 2 at a 48 hour interval for parvaquone. In this ex~eriment the efficacy of 720C will be examined against a range of isolates of T. parva (which have been used in earlier studies of parvaquone) that are representative of the challenge likely to be encounted in the field and which should provide a useful indication of 720C's potential for field use.
