Abstract
The grass pea, Lathyrus sativus, is a legume that is resistant to drought, flood and salt in addition to doing well in poor soils. For these reasons it serves as common food for millions of people during times of food emergency shortages due to poor harvest. Grass pea is very attractive as food source because it contains high level of proteins. Unfortunately, the grass pea seeds also contain N-oxalyl-L-2, 3-diaminopropanoic acid (ODAP), a neurotoxin. ODAP exists as two isomers, a-ODAP and ~-ODAP and the ~-ODAP has been shown to be responsible for the neurotoxic properties of the plant.
