Abstract
Mineral nitrogen fertilizers are used in large scale crop production because mineralizable nitrogen in .organic matter is not sufficient to sustain the required high crop yields. Many accounts have been given .of the efficiency of the different nitrogen fertilizer sources. It is generally agreed that .only a fraction .of fertilizer nitrogen is recovered by crops, the fraction between 30 blind 70 percent even under the best field condition (Allison, 1966; Chalk: et al., 1975; and Zamyatina, 1969). The rest is rendered unavailable within the Soil .or is I.ost from the soil by physical, chemical and biological processes. S1noe soil organic amendments and the method .of fertilizer placement influence such losses, the efficiency .of nitrogen fertilizer can be increased by proper placement, and the right type .of Soil .organic amendments.
