Abstract
This paper arises out of a study in progress at the Institute for Development Studies to assess the value of wildlife viewing as a form of land use in East Africa. It begins with a discussion of what is meant by the term "value" in the context of ·the land-use decision. While the main emphasis of the paper is on the objects, methods, and problems involved in the economic analysis of land-use alternatives, it finishes wi·th a few remarks based on the data for wildlife viewing which have been collec1ed so far.
