Abstract
TASCO Estates Ltd. r2quested the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARO Mlingano) to carry out an integrated soil survey and sisal identification study of the Kikwetu sisal estate. The purpose of the soil study was to characterize the soils of the estate in terms of physicals chemical and fertility properties. The study also included the assessment of the physical suitability of the estate lands for replanting with sisal and for other alternative crops such as pineapple I citrus and various forestry trees. The sisal study was aimed at the evaluation of the sisal status in general and at the inventory of the infestation with unwanted, low yielding varieties (Kaptura) in particular. Recommendations on proper management to avoid the spread of unwanted varieties are proposed.
