Abstract
There have been few description of soil development on the sedimentary rocks which occur around the periphery of the African Continent. This paper contains an account of certain soil features which became apparent during an investigation along part of the coast of southern Kenya (south of Mombasa). The Coastal soils have not previously been described in any detail, though Dale in a paper on coastal vegetation (1939) did suggest some possible edaphic relationships. Subsequently, Moomaw (1960) carried out a superficial study Of coast ecology. The local geology has been described by Caswell (1953).
