Abstract
As a consequence of the construction of the Chemeron dam in Baringo District the need was felt to develop the downstream area for smallholder irrigated agriculture. Initially five blocks of 48ha each were Provisionally indicated by the Provincial Irrigation Unit (RVP). This organisation requested Kenya Soil Survey to carry out preliminary investigations in these blocks in order to indicate the suitability of the soils for surface irrigation. That study revealed-rather varying conditions in soil texture, salinity and sodicity (van Engelen, 1983). For proper irrigation development more detailed data were needed and therefore Kenya Soil Survey was asked to execute a detailed soil survey of a much larger area. The results of this study are presented in this report.
