Abstract
A preliminary investigation with local Amaranthlls (Amaranthlls hybridlls) at Morogoro, Tanzania, has shown that with irrigation, nitrogen fertilizer (120 kg N ha-1) and a high seed rate (1.3 g viable seeds m_2 , at least) some 41 tonnes hectare-1 of total above ground fresh material can be produced in 38 days from sowing. This represents about 1.9 tonnes hectares-1 of total leaf protein. The local Amaranthus grew faster than Celosia argentea introduced from Nigeria although, as growth analysis showed, the latter had leafier characteristics.
