Abstract
In East Africa generally and in Uganda in Particular, a great amount of unnecessary Time and energy is expended by fishermen in Finding suitable stones for weighting gill nets And in securing, them onto the bottom ropes. In more developed overseas countries, fishermen, purchase pre-shaped lead weights but these are very expensive in Uganda as is sheet Lead which would lend itself to shaping into Weights. A further series of factors working against the use of lead weights are the high Incidence of theft of nets, the frequent heavy Storms and especially in the River Nile system, the floating islands of sudd which carry away Thousands of nets annually. Fishermen are therefore reluctant to spend more money on Net mounting than is absolutely necessary.
