Abstract
Shifting cultivation with its characteristic long fallow period has been the dorminant System of farming in Nigeria. The system combines a few years of farming with many years of bush fallowing. During this period soil fertility is restored. This restorative power is linked With the regrowth of deep-rooted, trees and shrubs which recycle plant nutrients. As the leaves and branches of these plants. Fall off they build up the soil organic organic matter (Nye and Greenland, 1965).
