Abstract
Potato is the second most important food crop in the country and plays a major role in food security and hunger reduction. Limited clean planting materials, however, compels most farmers to use tubers from previous harvests or those obtained from local markets or neighbours. This situation has unfortunately contributed greatly to spread of bacterial wilt in many crop growing areas. National potato yields have for similar reasons remained at less than 10 t per ha since the ADC Potato Project ceased to produce certified seeds almost two decades ago.
