Abstract
A computer model of one of the Makerere University experimental smallholdings was built. A parametric study was undertaken to investigate the impact of short-term restrictions upon "optimal" systems. It was demonstrated that as short-term cash became more limiting, the "optimal" farming system became more diverse and approximated more to actual practice.Experimental smallholdings have been suggested (Hall, 1969) since these may provide a useful approximation to the local resource-endowment situation.
