Abstract
Samples of Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) deWit. in eight different growth categories were analyzed for nitrogen before and after examining dry matter disappearance. This information was used to calculate percentage rumen digestible protein. The mean rumen digestion indexes for ground samples varied between 13.6 percent £or the shattered pods to 90.6 percent for the small developing pods. Crude protein varied from 5.2 percent for shattered pods to 31.7 percent for small new pods. Rumen digestible protein varied from 0.1 percent for shattered pods to 30.2 percent for small new pods. Laucaena can provide a high quality protein supplement for livestock provided that selectivity occurs either by the animal or by the individual in a cut and carry feeding system.
