Abstract
Many of the developing countries, which have major nutritional problems, produce an excess of materials rich in carbohydrates. Such materials can be utilized in fementation to produce microbial protein, which in tum ~ be used to upgrade both human food and animal feeds. Traditional protein sources are relatively more expensive and the absence of well developed technological facilities has contributed to losses through spoilage of even the limited resources available. Consequently, need exists to explore alternative ways of meeting the protein demands. Compared to the developed countries, the developing countries appear to have more agrowaste substrate raw materials that could be converted to protein sources (Moo-Young, 1977).
