Abstract
CupresSuS lusitanica Mill. is the most widely planted conifer in Ethiopia It was introduced in the country some 40-50 yell's ago. The oldest scattered trees. hedges and woodlots. planted on private farms and road sides, are found along the Ambo road, up to 50 Ian west of Addis AbabL The first industrial plantations were established in the 1950s around the fullest sawmills, 200 Ian south of Addis Ababa, in the Munessa forest, along the eastern escarpments of the Rift Valley. Later, during the 1960s and beyond. a notable concentration of Cupressus lusitanica plantations was established in Muness&: 3100 ha in total by 1987 (Jlrvholm and Tivell. 1987a).
