Abstract
The emergence of weed seedlings in pots and in the field is described in relation to both artificial watering and rainfall. Different species showed quite different patterns of emergence when watered but under rainfall all species germinated together in a series of flushes closely related to periods of heavy rainfall. The largest number of seeds germinated in the first flush at the onset of the rains. The importance of rapid weeding soon after this first flush is discussed.
