Abstract
It is estimated that beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) were introduced into Kenya some 300-400 years ago by the Portuguese via the East African Coast (Njugunah et. al., 1980). Over time, beans have spread throughout the country and have assumed the status of the most important pulse and rank second to maize (Zea mays L.) in importance as a staple food crop in Kenya.
