Abstract
The present soil survey is the third in a series of "Reconnaissance Soil Surveys" with multi-purpose land evaluation per topographic map sheet. This particular soil survey covers two sheets, namely the Kwale-Mombasa sheet and the Lungalunga sheet. Both sheets are on scale 1:100,000. Although the survey area has more rainfall than the other parts of the coast region, it may to a large extent be considered as representative of the coastal belt from Vanga to Lamu. The survey area has a steep rainfall gradient from northwest to southeast. This variation in rainfall is reflected in the land use pattern which varies from small-scale arable farming in the high rainfall areas to extensive grazing in the low rainfall areas.
