Abstract
Leaching is very intense in the tropics. Normal leaching rainfall (Ln) is for example, 3,860 mm (152.1 inches) in Monrovia (Liberia); even in the arid Sudanian savanna at Kano, Nigeria, it is 362 mm (14.8 inches). By comparison it is 160 mm (6.3 inches) in humid London and 220 mm (8.7 inches) in Moscow. Moreover, the solubility of silica increases with temperature. For all these reasons desilication is rapid in the tropics.
