Abstract
The Kenyan economy mainly depends on agriculture, yet over 80% of the country is classified as arid and semi-arid. These areas are characterised by low and erratic rainfall patterns of 100-1200 mm per annum, high evapotranspiration rates and fragile ecosystems that cannot support agriculture. Increased population pressure on arable land has also necessitated the exploitation of marginal lands through irrigation and water harvesting from rainfall.
