Abstract
Few physico-chemical studies have been made on water conditions in the pans which are found throughout much of Africa. HUTCHINSON et al. (1932) deals with pans in South Africa some hundreds of miles south of Rhodesia in different geological and climatic conditi ons. HARRISON (1962) has describedphysicochemical conditions in particular types of South African pans. JENKIN (1932) reports in detail the physico-chemical conditions in East African lakes. Between East Africa and the Transvaal (South Africa) little, if any, comparable work has been reported. RZOSKA (1961) in the Sudan and GAUTHIER (1928) in north west Africa have made detailed studies of temporary pools and lakes which provide a useful comparison with the present observations.
