Abstract
Maize streak virus (MSV), the causal agent of maize streak disease reduces maize yields by up to 100% (Iken and Amusa, 2004). Several disease control strategies against MSV disease have been tried with minimal success (Fajemisin et aI., 1984; Rensburg, 2001). And one strategy that has been employed with inconsistent results has been the development of maize germ plasm resistant to MSV (Barrow, 1992; Bosque-Perez et al. , 1998). Secondly, the application of pesticides in MSV control has been constrained by the recurring influx of migrant hopper populations that re-infect the crop after each application (Bosque-Perez et al., 1998; Mitsuhashi et al., 2002)
