Abstract
Water use by the 4ifferent cropping systems were in the order. Maize-beans ~ maize ~ beans> bare soil. Maize-beans intercrop, however, used only slightly more water than pure stand of maize or beans in comparable time periods. Beans used more water from the surface soil zones than maize, while maize-beans intercrop extracted more water from the deeper soil layers. It is apparent that maize roots must have penetrated deeper into the soil when in competition with beans for water in the surface soil zones.
