Abstract
Plants need water for their metabolic processes and for transpiration. The quantity actually used in metabolic processes is only a small fraction of the amount absorbed from the soil. Most of the water, about 99%, entering the plant escapes from the leaves and stan as water vapour. This process is termed transpiration. Some water is also lost from the root zone directly to the atmosphere by evaporation from the soil surface. The combined water loss through transpiration and evaporation is termed evapo-transpiration.
