Abstract
Reproductive causes were reported to constitute the most important single reason for the loss or disposal of dairy cows in Zambia (Igboeli, 1973). It was felt therefore that a survey of the parameters indicative of reproductive efficiency was necessary in order to identify some of the major problems of the dairy industry. No previous reports are available on the gestation periods, calving intervals, stillbirths, calf sex ratios, age at first calving and the number of services per conception in the case of the dairy cow in Zambia. By relating some of these parameters to milk production and to reports from elsewhere it is possible to evaluate the efficiency of the industry and to formulate policies to improve it.
