Abstract
In a mulch and irrigation experiment at Lyamungu on clonal material grown without shade from rooted cuttings on the single-stem system Stem Pitting was most severe' in one clone (Kil 48) where mulch was applied. The effect of irrigation was uncertain. In both clones examined mulching caused an increase in stem weight, yield and the top/root ratio, but only 111 one (Kil 48) were such increases associated with increases in symptoms of Stem Pitting. In both clones an increase in stem girth at soil level appeared to be associated with more severe Stem Pitting. Stem Pitting symptoms were also more pronounced at those levels of the stem where capping’s had been made. The possible significance of the results is discussed.
