Abstract
Good weed control had been obtained in the glyphosate treatments followed by alachlor/atrazine but the best looking maize was on the conventionally cultivated plots. The paraquat treatment followed by alachlor/atrazine encouraged the establishment of Digitaria abyssinica which was particularly severe in one replicate and appeared to be having an allelopathic effect on the maize. In terms of maize growth, it looks as though tillage is better than zero-tillage as a method of land preparation.
