Abstract
In the legend for the FAO/Unesco Soil Map of the World (1974) the NITOSOLS form a new main soil unit, to accommodate the former Reddish Brown Lateritic Soils (Terra Roxa estruturada; Ferrisols pp; Krasnozems pp). The NITOSOLS were separated from the Ferralsols (formerly Latosols pp) because of their combination of favourable physical properties and relatively high fertility. They are known to be strongly favoured agriculturally not only for subsistence farming in the (sub) tropics, but also for the growing of exacting commercial crops like coffee (see also Dudal, 1969)
