Abstract
Heterosis over mid-parent value and over the better parent, inbreeding depression and potence ratio were studied in five crosses of Upland Cotton, G. hirsutum L. at the Cotton Research Station Kibos. No appreciable amount of heterosis for any of the characters seed cotton yield, lint yield, lint percentage, lint index, fibre length and earliness, was observed. Slight inbreeding depression was observed and potence ratio estimates indicated that there was mostly incomplete dominance for the characters. A cytogenetic explanation is advanced for the absence or low expression ,of heterosis in Upland cotton.
