Abstract
During th8 year under review the performance of most crops was lower than the previous year because, of unfavourable weather conditions, pests and diseases and increasing cost of production. The early onset of rains interfered with land preparation. Reduced rains in the subsequent months resulted in soil moisture stress, also frost affected crops like maize, beans and potatoes. Achieved yield of maize was 32,018 tons valued at K$ 4,46,944 as compared to 52704 tons valued at Kf.6,470,000 during the previous year. Likewise there was a drop in potato production from 16,OOO tons valued at T {£.6, 240 ~OOO in 1989 to 115,200 tons valued at KSH 11. 520 ,000 in 1990. The higher value this year, ‘was due to steady higher prices which prevailed in th0 local markets because of reduction in supply.
