Abstract
Along the Coastal strip it was hot and dry in the first two months but rainfall set in quite early in March. The hinter land experienced harsher conditions which continued through into May. In Lower Taita severe drought was reported where ranches lost a substantial number of their animals and nearly all the dams some which never dried up in the past did e.g. Mwatate and Kigombo dams. Subsequent to the drought there was a stampede in form of livestock migration. Ranchers trying to move their animals to the rather lower areas of Coastal belt. Where such alternative was out ranchers took the advise the only natural choice of destocking by selling to avoid uneconomical deaths.
