Abstract
Uvarov (1921) suggested that crowding of locusts was a major factor in the development of "solitary" and "gregarious" phases. Since then, the effects of crowding on morphometric changes, rate of development, colour and fecundity have been studied in a number of insects (Long, 1953; Zaher and Long, 1959; Kennedy, 1961; Kiritani, 1964; Kiritani and Kimura, 1966; Hunter Jones, 1966; Youdeowei, 1967; Hodjat, 1969 and Gruys, 1970).
