Abstract
Raising the productivity of our soils and ensuring sufficient food supply for our population are among the main aims of the research work at the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARl). It is well known that particularly phosphate and nitro-gen fertilizers are necessary to increase the yields of our crops. However, with fertilizer prices so high that small scale farmers can hardly afford them, fertilizer recommendations should be based on economic considerations, particularly for the smallholders in . Kenya who produce more than 75 % of the total food crops.
